El Porto is the small north end of Manhattan Beach, an unincorporated county pocket of about 34 acres that the city annexed in November 1980. It runs from 45th Street at the El Segundo boundary south to roughly 38th Street, with Crest Drive on the inland side and the beach to the west. Highland Avenue is the only through street, carrying on north as Vista Del Mar, and everything else is a grid of numbered east-west streets reached from named alleys such as El Porto Street between 39th and 40th. The Strand ends here, and the beach bike path continues north toward Dockweiler State Beach.
That layout makes El Porto the hardest access in Manhattan Beach. Streets are tight and steep, many buildings are served only from the alley, garages are small, and in summer the beach traffic fills every gap. A lot of the housing is apartments and condominiums in buildings with no lift and narrow internal stairs, so the carry from the door to the truck is often the biggest part of the job. Because a full-size truck frequently cannot sit close to the building, a smaller shuttle vehicle running between the address and a larger truck parked on a wider street is a normal part of the plan, and it is identified and priced at the estimate. Addresses that front only onto The Strand have no vehicle access at all and are qualified by phone before a date is set.
