It depends on what you value and on what you own. Full packing genuinely saves days of your time and packs fragile items better than most people do. But it is an honest expense, and plenty of households are better served by packing their own books, linen and clothes and having us do only the kitchen, the glassware and anything fragile or valuable. That hybrid is what we would recommend to most people, and we will say so.
On an interstate move, yes, and it is worth knowing before you decide. Items packed by the owner are generally treated differently in a damage claim than items packed by the carrier. If something fragile genuinely matters to you, having us pack it puts you in a stronger position if anything goes wrong.
Typically a day for a one-bedroom and two or more for a larger home, done the day before the move rather than the same morning. Packing and loading on the same day is possible for a small flat but it makes for a long day and a rushed one. We schedule them separately where the size warrants it.
Documents, medication, jewellery, keys, chargers, and anything you will want that first evening. Also anything genuinely irreplaceable for sentimental reasons, not because it would not be safe but because you will feel better having it with you. We will tell you what to set aside before we start rather than packing it and finding it three days later.
Hazardous items, which is a legal restriction rather than a choice: flammable liquids, gas cylinders, aerosols, paint, fireworks and similar. Perishables are a practical no. We will point these out as we go rather than leaving you to find them in a box at the other end.
A written one, and a not-to-exceed figure inside it. California requires a WRITTEN estimate rather than a binding one, and the state's Maximum Rate Tariff caps rates on in-state moves. A NOT-TO-EXCEED number in writing is what actually limits your bill. Most disputes come from items added on the day rather than from the estimate itself, so an accurate inventory protects you more than any clause.
Ask for the CAL T number and check it. The CPUC stopped regulating household movers on 1 JULY 2018; authority now sits with the Department of Consumer Affairs BUREAU OF HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND SERVICES.
